* Bark collection is only permitted 3 days per year in Yamakumada. We work for a month to turn the bark into fibre.
* Natural materials have many different expressions.
* You can split the bark to any thickness you want.
* When tearing or using, wet with water.
* Add yarn as you knit. You can also combine it with other yarns. You can also tie the ends together to make a long string.

⏤ しな布とは
シナノキの樹皮から布を作る、古代より山村に伝えられてきた稀有な自然布で、日本の三大古代布の一つです。
その繊維利用の歴史は縄文時代にまで遡ると言われ、遥か昔から山で暮らす人々の道具の布として伝えられてきました。
現在では新潟県と山形県のわずか三つの集落にてごく僅かに生産が続いており、「羽越しな布」の名で国の伝統的工芸品に指定されています。
しな布作りは気の遠くなるような手作業の連続です。
樹皮が布になるまで、およそ一年かけて作られるこのしな布は、生産の過酷さ、販売形態や賃金の旧態依然により担い手が激減し、幻の布と呼ばれるまでに希少な布となってしまいました。
連綿と山に生きてきた人々の叡智と忍耐の賜物であるこの布を、現代の生活にぜひ取り入れてご愛用ください。

新潟県の北の端、山道の行き止まりの集落・山熊田。
およそ30名がひっそりと暮らす “マタギとしな布の村” です。
私たちはそんな山熊田で、しな布の原料採取 - 糸作り - 機織り - 販売までを行い、後継者の育成やしな布の振興にも取り組んでいます。
山熊田産のしな布は、糸が細く、ほのかに光沢があり、野性味と上品さを兼ね備えた質の良さが特徴です。
